Do you ever feel guilt about music? I do. It's usually when a band releases a Best-Of, or return for a homecoming tour after a long absence and I start to see a whole lot of people getting excited about it but can't figure out why. Usually I know who these bands are, and a good smattering of their output, too. But somewhere along the line, I failed to convert from what I deem a casual listener into an actual fan. I become one of those people whose Rdio collections is full of buzz bands I won't actually like in more than ten minutes, while the legacy artists sit in the back there waiting for their turn in the sun. Something For Kate is one of those bands that I simply haven't given that attention they deserved over the years. As Colin wrote a while ago, they're the group that turned many people into alternative-Australian rock devotees just by hearing them once on the radio. Part of the problem is their ubiquity; the band has, to my knowledge, had exactly the same line-up since the late '90s and busied themselves primarily with putting out good albums for listeners who can take the time to appreciate them, rather than hunting for hype or accolades. Which is why, listening to them now, I sort of feel like a fraud. (more...)
